Camp bustled about the canine, his red eyes narrowed, calculated and cold. He stood confidently in the camp before letting out a huff, a howl escaping him, demanding respect, attention. "Warrior, Whelps, Healers, My deputy, gather around me for a meeting. We have ceremonies to get through, and preparations to hurry" they called, waiting expectantly. "First, I must address those slacking off" the large wolf snarled ,eyeing some of those who looked down with guilt and fear. "Name 1, Name 2 and Name 3, you did not report back to me or Deputy's name at all, and I doubt name 2 even went on the patrol. For three mornings, and four nights, you shall not join the pack when we eat. You will miss out and starve. If you want to live, I suggest you work hard and fulfil your part" and when he finished, everyone was silent. Not a sound to be heard. He shook out his fur before continuing on, the warm, horrid summer's sun burning them all, the air thick and humid. "Prey is of abundance, and so are resources. We must seize this chance to build our camp. There are battles ahead, I know that. We must be ready. Pups, when I call your names, you must step forwards, not backwards" a low growl emerged, rumbling and rolling from his chest like thunder. "Let us begin"

Silence, complete silence. It was how Akela liked it to be honest, able to hear the comforting sounds of crickets and other woodland creatures. A owls hooting had caught their attention, Akela, or better known as Aki, spinning on their paws to find the direction the noise had come from. It wasn't for the fact that they wanted to do some hunting, stretch their long, lanky legs and feel the chilly wind buffering against their fur, no, Aki simply wanted to find the direction it had come from just to see if their senses were still sharp as ever. However, upon being unable to find the hooting creature, as it had fallen silent, like it had never even existed or called out in the forest, Aki showed disappointment as a soft, annoyed huff was emitted from their muzzle. They needed away time to relax, and here they were, searching for some feathered hooting mystery that they had been almost certain they wouldn't have found in the first place. Still, it was a bit disappointing as they, yet again, rounded on their paws to continue the trek they had started as soon as most of the pack was sound asleep. But the comforting swaying of the branches and leaves, containing colors of yellow, orange brown, some green even and crunched under Akelas paws, falling as the wind tugged lightly on the thick, wooden sticks that were attached to the tree. Why had they always enjoyed this particular time? When the leaves began to color and fall, the air cooled down and animals began their preparations for wintertime, it had always provided them comfort, like a pup nursing at their mothers side. Though, rather quickly that comfort was shattered as a voice rose from behind Aleka, having a rather aggressive tone. "You left us,"the familiar voice had growled out, "to rot away with those cruel humans while you got to run wild," shock pooled in Akis gaze as they glanced over their shoulder. Their guess of who it was had been correct, Honeybee stood on all four of his paws, putting hardly any weight on the one that had been deformed from birth. However, right as Akela had opened their jaws to protest, to argue that they wanted to come back, a light twitch ran through their body and darkness overwhelmed their senses. As Aki blinked open their eyes, they recognized the herbs they had been sorting during the night, a soft sigh of relief escaping them as they scooted a pile of marigold towards its place in the organized spots. Silently, they recognized the feeling of despair tumbling in their chest, but they pushed that down. Aleka would deal with that later, for now they had a job to do and one that was important, or at least they believed the organization of the herbs were important.

"You need to choose."

As the words flooded through her mind, through her blood, the breath of Lumiera's sleeping form hitched, muscles coiling tight beneath soft fur. In the dream, her ears drifted back, though she resisted pinning them. She could see no one, but the voices surrounded her, brimming in equal parts with anger and desperation.

"Choose," they whispered. "It is your duty to choose."

Wreathing around her like snakes, they continued, words devolving into incomprehension whispers and growls. She could feel them in her bones, rippling through her like an icy tremor. Yet as they chanted and pleaded, beyond their demands were the choices.

So many choices spread out before her, each harder to make than the next. They overwhelmed her, crawling across her skin like spiders as they too hissed and whispered. "Choose me," one insisted. "I could save your pack," hissed another. She was covered in them, a blanket of choices so thick she could hardly breathe.

"I can't! It's too much!"

The words departed Lumiera's lips in a rush and plunged her back into the waking world. The spider-like choices dissipated like mist on a breeze, and it took her a moment to realize she was trembling.

"Breathe, sister. Just breathe with me." The voice was soothing, familiar, and Lumiera's eyes opened slowly to see one of her littermates before her. Concentrating on the steady breathing of her sibling, Lumiera mimicked the steady flow of air until her muscles loosened and her tremors stilled. As she calmed, her sibling nuzzled her. "Are you alright, Lumi?"

A grateful smile graced the young leader's features, tentative, but there. "I'm alright. It was just a dream." Lumiera assured, and allowed herself to acknowledge this as true. Her pack was patient and understanding, they knew she did not have all the answers. It was just a dream. Yet it had felt so real.

With another deep breath, Lumiera centered herself, giving her sibling a resolved nod. "Was there something you needed? Of course, you are always welcome in my den, but you didn't just come to comfort me, right?" With something of guilt or concern in their eyes, Lumiera was offered a nod.

"The elk herd has migrated toward Limberlost - we need the hunting, but if we pursue them we might end up crossing the border in the hunt...should we try anyway?" For a moment, hesitation washed over Lumiera, and she closed her eyes. Yet even as she did so, a moment of clarity brought an answer to her. She was not certain it was the right one, but she could only hope.

"If the herd has not yet crossed the border, see if you can split the herd and drive your target toward us," she said. "If you have no luck, the boar should be plentiful in the orchard now that the fruit has started falling."

As a weight seemed to lift from her sibling's shoulders at the suggestion, the hybrid retreating from the den with a smile, Lumiera felt relief flood through her, warming the chill that had been threatening her spine. 'Maybe I can do this. At least for now,' she mused, and for the first time, she believed that might be true.

Being a healer, one grew accustomed to the sounds of pups. Their yips of excitement, their whines for attention, their squeals when play got a little too rough. It was all part of life, playing a role that led to daily visits to the nursing den. But a healer also learned not to ignore those sounds. A patient so young would usually be preceded by a panicked carer bustling in, but it was better to be prepared rather than blocking out the sounds for a doze.

'The pups should be asleep,' Rue had mused at the squealing whimpers resonating across the camp. That did not sound like a hungry pup or rough play. It sounded like a pup in pain. And so Rue had risen swiftly.

Within moments there came the expected panicked mother.

In her jaws was clasped the scruff of the offending pup, although she somehow managed to flood her worry into muffled words despite the fur and squealing. It took only a moment to diagnose the situation. The pup's right shoulder was wrenched slightly out of place, causing it to yelp as it was set delicately upon the softest nest. But that was not the only issue.

Upon the pup's forehead was a rushed, sloppy mark of fresh berry-bright paint. A protection mark. The mother had prioritized superstition first over rushing to a healer. A brief growl rumbled low in Rue's chest, bubbling forth toward their throat. They said nothing.

Even as Rue shouldered past the fretting mother to reach the pup, their tail lashed an indication toward the herb stores. Scampering paws were their answer, heard only because the pup's squeals had quieted to whimpers. Rue trusted their whelp to figure out what they needed to retrieve. Treating pain was one of the first things a healer learned.

If only the mother was more...cooperative. Frustrated with her babbled demands and the way her anxious demeanor only left the pup fidgety and panicking, Rue snapped their jaws toward the dam, lips curling into a warning snarl. "If you won't be quiet and calm down, then leave and let me do my job." The mother recoiled, jaws clamping shut and eyes wide. In a breath, her head lowered submissively, and Rue's expression returned to neutrality. Better.

Dutifully, the whelp was at their side, softly encouraging the pup to take the pain medicine. Content that the whelp's gentler demeanor would do the trick, Rue lay down, ignoring the incredulous mother as they waited for the herb to take effect.
