A handsome Golden Retriever/Border Collie Mix, Maxwell has a nice coat of golden fur. Light tan, almost white markings grace his muzzle and up between his eyes, then down over his chest to halfway down his belly. These lighter markings also appear as stockings on his legs and on the tip of his tail. Around his face and shoulders are little dots—ticking that makes it look like he has freckles. His ears are folded down like a Retriever’s and his legs, chest, and tail are feathered like one. If it weren’t for his slightly slimmer build and his lighter markings, most wouldn’t even know he wasn’t a full-blooded Retriever.

If there’s anything Maxwell loves, it’s adventure. His late owner used to take him on walks to all sorts of places from different cities to parks to hiking trails. Each had fascinated him, and his cheerful nature had often made him a friend to other dogs he met along the way. When others seemed frightened by the new surroundings, his compassionate nature kicked in and he would try to soothe their worries while still being honest about possible dangers, though he would always point out that humans tended to prepare for worst case scenarios. Truly, all this dog wants is peace and love among all.
He can be a bit absentminded, however, and his mind will wander away while he’s about to do something. His late owner sometimes had to remind him that he had food in his bowl because his mind would go down such a long rabbit hole. These thoughts usually led to things that he wanted to do, and his ambitious side would kick in so that he’d try to reach those goals. He would never try to harm anyone in the process, however. He treated everyone casually, like a friend, and simply didn’t have it in him to bring them pain. He was a bit too high-spirited to intentionally cause pain, though sometimes demanding action and being progressive when things were wrong could step on toes.
Perhaps his worst traits are that he’s childish in the sense that he’s very much still a puppy at heart, more interested in playing most of the time than taking things seriously. It’s incredibly easy to get him excited over something, even if it’s just a game of tag. And then he might forget half-way through the game what he was even doing. Not to mention he believes things easily, making him rather gullible. The only thing he doesn’t believe is that eating too much is bad for you—so how he isn’t twice his weight after indulging in thrown out steak no one is sure.
HISTORY
There’s not a whole lot to Max’s history, really. He lived with a lovely young man that would take him on tons of adventures to parks, cities, and hiking trails.
He had lived with this man ever since he was 8 weeks old. His mother, a gorgeous Golden Retriever, had managed to get with the neighbor’s Border Collie and produced a litter of pups that couldn’t quite be used in the show ring. So they were put online, where Max’s owner Charlie found him and fell in love with the goofy pup.
It was a good life. Charlie quickly found out he had to be careful how much food he put down since Maxwell would eat a whole 20 lb bag of dog food in one sitting if given the chance. This was actually what prompted Charlie to start taking Maxwell on walks, aside from Charlie’s own love of the outdoors. Turns out, Maxwell loved it too. Charlie even got Maxwell his own little satchel bag to carry things in, like sticks and rocks that he found and liked on the trip. Charlie would often look over and find the silly dog slipping things into the bag. At one point it had worn through at one corner and Charlie patched it up with a strong piece of denim.
Unfortunately, Charlie developed cancer after a year of being with Maxwell. In January 2021, he finally succumbed to it, though he had done his best to keep on taking Maxwell to new places in the meantime. Maxwell had known his friend was sick, but there was little he could do besides be there for him. When Charlie didn’t come back home Maxwell knew it was over. He had already dug out a hole under the fence in the back yard and had been escaping to go find food, but now he would be a stray dog forever, unless some kind soul took him in.
